Agaete

Agaete: the most north-western village of Gran Canaria

Coming to Gran Canaria without visiting Agaete is like saying you've been to Barcelona but haven't been to Las Ramblas. Agaete, in the northwest of Gran Canaria, hides among its streets and corners the pure essence of the Canarian feeling, the authenticity of the coexistence of the Canarian people as well as the most historical traditions of the island, such as the famous Rama de Agaete and disappeared emblems such as the Finger of God.

Furthermore, Agaete has a lot to offer its visitors: from exciting cultural festivals such as the Rama de Agaete which takes place in August and attracts thousands of Canaries to the sound of the Banda de Agaete; to the only coffee plantation in Europe, passing through beautiful valleys and ending at the Puerto de las Nieves, from where the boats depart to Tenerife.

It is here where the life of this fishing and farming village is centered. A town of contrasts and traditions that has everything necessary to satisfy the visitors, without leaving aside its history, even having an Oil and Vinegar shop more than 80 years old. And we cannot talk about Agaete without mentioning the famous and now disappeared natural monument El Dedo de Dios (God's Finger): a finger-shaped rock formation that was found in the sea, in front of the Las Nieves dock, and that disappeared in one of the storms that hit the islands several years ago.

Agaete: white houses in a fishing village

Agaete is a special place in Gran Canaria, and only when you get in you realize that this town hides something that makes it different. The beauty of its innumerable white houses, the arid climate that normally abounds, or the peculiarity of its fishing port among many other characteristics make it one of the essential visits in Gran Canaria.

Agaete is a taste of the sea. Its small promenade offers you multiple options to taste not only fresh fish of the day but also other typical Canarian dishes such as Papas Arrugadas con Mojo, Gofio Escaldao or a few squid dishes.  Without a doubt, this is a town of flavours, contrasts and tradition to which you can take a break during your holidays.
