Maspalomas International Carnival

Maspalomas Carnival and Parade

The Canary Islands are a land of contrasts and traditions but above all of influences from all the visitors who every year decide to come to the archipelago on holiday or to live. All this influence can be clearly seen in the south of Gran Canaria: varied gastronomy, Canarian fusions with other countries, people of different cultures and nationalities.

All this development has made Gran Canaria one of the favourite destinations for holidays or long stays here. In the south of the island we have multiple entertainment areas and festivals throughout the year, as well as the culmination of Canarian culture: The Carnival.

For the Canarians Carnival is not just another party: it is a way of life. The groups prepare themselves a year in advance to have everything perfect in the carnival season. And this is not only a custom among the older ones, since children there are already "murgueros" and "comparsistas" who live these celebrations with illusion and emotion.

In 2024 the Carnival celebrates its 50th Anniversary!

The Maspalomas Carnival had already chosen its theme months ago in September last year. All residents of Maspalomas were encouraged to vote on the Maspalomas website for a theme until finally the theme "TV Memories" won with a total of 48.3% of the votes.

Nostalgia and joy will be combined in this year's festivities where a large number of participants will dress up as characters and memories from the TV shows of long ago. There is no doubt that this year's carnivals could also be considered as a tribute to the Spanish TV shows that were born and became nationally known around the seventies.

For example, programmes like "1,2,3, Responda otra vez"; "Crónicas de un Pueblo" or "El Hombre y la Tierra". Or even the news of their times, for it was thanks to them that the island of Gran Canaria has gained so much popularity as a tourist site up to the present day.

Carnival will be held between the 7th and 17th of March; and although the timetable for these long-awaited festivities is not yet available, there is no doubt that it will be a celebration to remember.

Furthermore, it is certain that the Grand Carnival Parade will be held on the 16th March on Saturday in order to start the weekend with joy and festivities that will haunt us throughout the week.
