The Almond Blossom Festival in Tejeda and Valsequillo

Almond Blossom Festivity

It is one of the most popular and oldest festivals in the Canary Islands (the first ones were in the 70's), which is celebrated in the municipalities of the midlands of Gran Canaria. In Tejeda (considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain) and Valsequillo a large crowd of residents from all the villages of the Canary Islands and many other curious visitors congregate to celebrate the blossoming of the almond harvest. It normally takes place between January and February and lasts for several consecutive weekends, so you have several options to enjoy this fiesta, which has been awarded the title of Fiesta de Interés Turísitico Regional (Festival of Regional Tourist Interest).

The festival of the almond tree in bloom is one of those perfect events to experience the feeling and the coexistence of the Canarian people, as well as their traditions.  To the rhythm of the traditional music (Canarian folklore) the dancers infect the visitors with their rhythm and happiness, dancing in the typical clothes of our culture while a multitude of activities are carried out.

You can recover energy with typical Canarian food (papas arrugadas con mojo, goat cheese, almogrote, almond sweets...), enjoy demonstrations of the islands' native sports such as Canarian wrestling or shepherd's jumping and delight in an exhibition of silbo Gomero, a type of non-verbal communication from the islands.

If you want to immerse yourself in the culture and customs of the Canary Islands, you can't miss these festivities. And if you wish, take one of the many hiking routes offered in the centre of the island, where you can get lost among the almond blossoms and take magnificent photos to decorate your holiday album with a different image to that offered in the travel guides: a contrast of whites and roses and the Roque Nublo in the background.
