Tías

What to see and do in Tías!

Tías is a small municipality in the centre of Lanzarote where you can find the José Saramago House-Museum or the Church of La Candelaria.  Tías is also home to one of the busiest tourist areas of the island: Puerto del Carmen. If you are wondering, what can I do here? The answer is simple: there are many shopping and leisure options within easy reach. From a visit to Rancho Texas Zoo to spending the day in the sun on Pocillos beach. What's more, you are very close to a very popular and magnificent spot for photography: Las Grietas. The Montaña Blanca volcano left behind rivers of lava that formed these sedimentary layers that resemble the Colorado Canyon!

José Saramago House-Museum, "a house made of books" as the author himself defined the place where he lived his last years on the island, is a point of interest in Tías that you cannot miss. It is divided into several rooms with their own particularities and stories that we invite you to know during your visit: in his study, great works were written. Do you know why the clocks that decorate the room are stopped? Dare to discover it!

Candelaria Church was formerly a hermitage that was destroyed by lava and was nicknamed 'la quemada' (the burnt one) by the inhabitants of Tías. It was rebuilt in 1796 giving it a vaulted style thanks to its semicircular arches that protect the figure of the virgin from Tenerife, becoming a place of worship and pilgrimage.

In Masdache, a village of Tías, we find part of La Geria. These spectacular and characteristic vineyards planted on the slopes of Timanfaya provide grapes to all the wineries in the area that have managed to make a name for themselves in the winemaking scene thanks to the intense and particular flavour of their wines. Here we cannot fail to mention El Grifo winery and Wine Museum, without a doubt an obligatory stop for wine lovers who want to taste this product with Designation of Origin.

Puerto del Carmen is synonymous with beaches and shopping. On the one hand, it offers windsurfing enthusiasts two spots for the practice of this sport: Playa de Los Pocillos and Matagorda, ideal for its windy and calm waters, and on the other hand, Playa Grande and Playa Chica, where families spend the day enjoying the sea and sand, as well as being an area used for beginners' diving. Haven't you done your shopping in Lanzarote yet? Puerto del Carmen gives us a long promenade with multiple shops of all kinds so that you don't leave without your souvenir of the island: handmade leather goods, fabrics, typical gastronomy; in controversy with the usual shopping offered by the Biosfera Shopping Centre, one of the most important on the island. Without a doubt, Puerto del Carmen has options for all tastes!

If you come with children, we leave you a perfect plan for a family day out: visit Rancho Texas, a zoo where you will find different animal species, multiple shows and dining options that will make your day an incredible experience.

In Puerto Calero we find one of the largest and most important marinas in Lanzarote where you will find the Cetacean Museum where you can visit different rooms with information about different marine mammals of the culture and history of the islands and even, if you wish, you can go up in the submarine.

And we cannot forget the great protagonist, not only of Lanzarote, but also of Tías and the surrounding municipalities: Timanfaya National Park.
