Yaiza

What to see and do in Yaiza!

In the south of Lanzarote is this small municipality of picturesque white houses that is home to the most visited spot on the island: Timanfaya National Park. The white houses contrast with the reddish tones of the mountains. Here you can find the church of Los Remedios and Casa de la Cultura (cultural centre) Benito Pérez, an illustrious Lanzarote writer, which houses an exhibition hall for art and photography by local authors and which serves as a meeting point for those who wish to get to know the culture of the island of Lanzarote. Furthermore, from Yaiza you can easily reach other important places on the island such as Los Hervideros and El Golfo, two must-see places if you come to Lanzarote. Do you know La Geria? Just a few minutes away you will also find this area with its characteristic vineyards where one of the best wines on the island are produced.

Timanfaya National Park or Fire Mountains is the most visited enclave on the island of Lanzarote with almost one million visitors a year. In this lunar landscape, as some refer to it, you can enjoy not only the volcano route but also the geothermal experiments that take place on Islote de Hilario. Have you ever seen a geyser? Here you can see how the heat emanating from the earth propels water and you can even touch the hot volcanic rock with your bare hands, an experience that will leave you speechless!

On the other hand, a few kilometres away at Los Hervideros you can marvel at the roar of the waves crashing against the rock formation that creates the sensation of boiling. Nearby is El Golfo, where you can visit the protected area of Lago Verde or Charco de los Clicos, which owes its name to the colour of its waters, tinged by the sulphur which leave a picture of contrasts between the greenish tones, the black sand that surrounds it and the blue of the sea. Did you know that it is home to small crabs called Clicos? Find out more on our guided tour!

Finally, it is worth mentioning the wine culture of Lanzarote. Every visitor should not miss the opportunity to visit the area of La Geria because of its unique characteristics. Here wine is made in a different way to the traditional way: our vineyards are planted on volcanic rock at the foot of Timanfaya and surrounded by stone walls to protect the crops. This soil and the island's climate favour the growth of the best grapes for the production of wine (mostly Malvasia) which is renowned not only on the island but throughout the whole of Spain. Book a few hours of your holidays and visit any of the wineries in La Geria to enjoy tasting this product with Denomination of Origin.
