El Monumento al Campesino - The Peasants' monument

One of the most emblematic places of Lanzarote and one of those that generate more pride among the inhabitants of Lanzarote to the rest of the world. The sculpture is the work of César Manrique and is located in the municipality of San Bartolomé, in the centre of the island.

It is an artist's recognition of the men and women who work in the fields, as well as signifying Manrique's consecration as an artist; undoubtedly a turning point in his career.

César Manrique knew how to integrate the white houses and buildings of Lanzarote with the volcanic landscape of the island of volcanoes. Another example of the admiration and respect for Lanzarote's architecture that he developed in this work with the help of his inseparable Jesús Soto.

Monument to the farmer or statue of "La Fecundidad" (Fertility)

It is the pillar of the house museum to the peasant. This 15-metre high sculpture was created by César Manrique in 1969 with the invaluable help of Jesús Soto, who developed the iron and concrete sculpture. The main reason for the sculpture was a wink to the fertility of the land of Lanzarote and consequently to the invaluable work of all the farmers of that time. The monument is framed in a pile of stones called La Peña de Tajaste.

House Museum

The museum house is integrated in this space in the center of Lanzarote where it is made a review and a route to all the history of agriculture and the life of the farmers, the architecture and crafts of Lanzarote as well as the gastronomy of the island and its changes during the years. In short, during the whole tour, a tribute is made to all those Lanzaroteans who, through their work, have built up the economy of an island, Lanzarote.
